Archaeological Park And Museum Of Capo Colonna

Ten kilometers south of the city of Crotone, on the promontory of Capo Colonna where the great Heraion Lakinion used to be, the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna stands today, built by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Calabria. The Park extends for about 50 hectares, in one of the most important sacred areas of the entire Mediterranean basin: the sanctuary dedicated to Hera Lacinia, wife and sister of Zeus, protectress of pastures, women, female fertility, family and marriage.
Few remains of this sanctuary are still visible today, dominated by a “desolate ruin”. the only column of the temple that, defying the centuries, has stood there as a perennial testimony.
At the entrance of the Archaeological Park, you can now visit the new museum of Capo Colonna, where you will see exhibits found in the area.

Aragonese Castle Of Le Castella

A splendid military fortress in the municipality of Isola Capo Rizzuto, which is also suggestive for its triumphant position on a small island linked to the coast only by a thin tongue of land, has now become the symbol of cultural tourism in Calabria.
The fortress, built in the fifteenth century, is what remains of a vast area that was a real village with walls: the building never hosted the nobility of the place, but served as a shelter for soldiers engaged against attacks from the sea.
The important environmental context from which it is surrounded, the Marine Reserve of Capo Rizzuto, is the largest marine protected area in Italy, and also contributes to exalt the castle.

Museum Lilio Di Cirò

Museum dedicated to an exceptional cyrotian: the famous scientist Luigi Lilio (Aloysius Lilius), the inventor of the modern calendar that from 1582 onwards radically changed the way we scan days, months and years; the calendar then took the definition of Gregorian as approved during the papacy of Gregory XIII.
Some rooms of the museum are dedicated to Lilio and his research in astronomy and science; other rooms are dedicated to Luigi Siciliani, a man of letters, writer and politician originally from Cirò, who lived between the 800 and 900.
